Anterior Supine Total Hip Replacement
What is the Anterior Supine Hip Replacement?
The anterior approach
to hip replacement allows us to reach the hip joint from the front of the hip
as opposed to the lateral (side), or the posterior (back) approach. This
technique minimizes the pain and recovery time.
With the anterior
approach, we can replace a hip joint without detaching muscle from the pelvis
or femur during surgery. The most important muscles needed for hip function are
the gluteal muscles that are attached to the pelvis and femur and by not
distributing or detaching these muscles, we reduce the healing time.
How is patient recovery improved with Anterior Hip
Replacement?
Anterior Hip
Replacement allows patients to immediately bend their hip freely and bear full
weight when comfortable, resulting in a more rapid return to normal function.
After surgery, patients are instructed to use their hip normally without
cumbersome restrictions. In supervised therapy, patients go up and down stairs
before their hospital release.
The program enables Alpha Orthopedics to implement a comprehensive system of tools and techniques to help our patients make a more Rapid Recovery after minimally invasive total joint replacement.
With the Rapid Recovery Program, patients can return to work after a couple of weeks and the recovery is significantly shorter. New materials and implant designs allow a surgical approach that has less effect on muscles and other tissues. This, combined with our specially designed physical therapy, advanced pain management and counseling, enables our patients to recover more rapidly and return to their daily activity as quickly as possible.
On September 2007 I had my surgery for knee replacement, and on October 2008 I had my second knee replaced. On the day of the surgeries, the staff was very nice and they calmed me down. The anesthesiologist came to see me before surgery and explained what he was going to do. Dr. Toulson came to see me before surgery and met with my family. The staff was wonderful and and I was quite calm and had no worries about surgery. My stay at the hospital was first class and when I got home the home care could not have been better. I went to physical therapy for a few weeks. I feel great and I think I have a new lease of life. I am ready to go back to dancing.

After Living with progressive hip pain for some time, I went to see Dr. Toulson for consultation. Hip joint replacement was recommended. He answered all my questions and explained the procedure. Total hip replacement was done in February and the right side in April. During my hospital stays and office visits, Dr. Toulson was a caring and dedicated person. I feel honored to have been his patient

My experience with Alpha Orthopedics was a very positive one. After Dr. Toulson heard my past background with my left knee, I was x-rayed and it was determined that I was bone on bone on the left inside part of my knee. After discussing several options with Dr. Toulson, I chose to try a non-invasive approach first which was three shots of synvisc. This did not help so my only other alternative was a partial knee replacement. After choosing this route and scheduling my surgery, the pre-op with Dr. Toulson was very positive and reassuring that all would go well and that I would have a very speedy recovery. Upon arrival at McKinneyMedicalCenter, the preparation by the nurses and anesthesiologists was informative and comforting. Surgery went well. Dr. Toulson and his team follow up was great. The special menu at the hospital was fantastic. I was in for two days. The follow-up home care and therapy went well and I was fairly mobile in about three weeks and walking with no aids after four weeks. I would recommend Alpha Orthopedics to anyone. The attentiveness and caring of Dr. Toulson and his staff was a very positive experience and I would go back with no hesitation.

I suffered for over a year over a knee replacement that was done in Oklahoma. I found Alpha Orthopedics through my pain management doctors in Sherman, TX. From the very visit to Dr. Toulson, he and his staff treated me like a person and they helped me by fixing the knee and relieving the pain. Dr. Toulson's bedside manner was a big help after surgery. He and his staff made my total experience very helpful. I'd recommend Dr. Toulson to anyone needing joint replacement.

In 2008, I was 69 years old. Dr. Touslon replaced both my knees. Right one Feb 26; left one April 27. Dr. Toulson and his caring office staff helped make my experience as good and easy as possible. Dr. Toulson is a kind and caring doctor. In the hospital and the follow up office visits, Dr. Toulson's smiling face helped me to want to move on to a healthy life, so I would like to say Thank you, Dr. Charles Toulson and his caring staff.

I believe that Dr. Toulson is a great Orthopedic Surgeon. I am extremely happy with the hip replacement that he did for me. When I first saw him I could barely walk even with the aid of a walker. Now 3 short months later, I am well on my way to recovery. I would recommend Dr. Toulson to anyone who might need the services he provides. Thank you Dr. Charles Toulson!

When I first met Dr. Toulson I knew he was the right surgeon to repair my leg. His positive and optimistic outlook were perfect, and although he never discussed un-realistic goals, I always felt that my chances of keeping my leg and a successful recovery would be excellent with Dr. Toulson. We both said "wow" many times during the recovery process, and although I never lost confidence or hope, I often wondered how long it would be before things were normal again. I am very grateful for Dr. Toulson and his team for the excellent surgery which allowed me to fully recover the use of my leg. After months of physical therapy and the care of my wife and family, I am very pleased to say that my life has returned to normal. I still have a slight limp, almost un-noticeable, which continues to improve and I am positive will eventually disappear. I still can't dance, but I can do the things I did before my fall... walking with my dog, keeping up with my grand kids, and being healthy and independent. I am thankful for Dr. Toulson and his team, I am absolutely pleased with his results and could not ask for a better outcome.

I am a Police Officer whose career and overall quality of life has been significantly improved by trusting Dr. Charles Toulson to perform Bi-lateral Hip Replacement Surgery in September of 2008. Even though Dr. Toulson had performed the procedure at other medical centers in his career, I was the first Bilateral hip replacement recipient at the Medical Center of McKinney. Here is a short synopsis of what led to the procedure. I had always been an active sort of person, an avid bicyclist on and off the job, and one who loved tennis and evening walks. Around October 2004, I started noticing constant stiffness and pain in both hips. Initially, I sought the assistance of a Chiropractor for help. The chiropractor told me that I had developed osteoarthritis, and that the advanced stage of my condition could only be corrected with hip replacement surgery. Over time, I stopped one activity after another, and kept putting off the inevitable until I could not bear the pain, discomfort and sleeplessness it caused any longer. At the initial consultation, Dr. Toulson confirmed what everyone else has said over the past several years. His only question was whether we would do them one at a time or both on the same day. When he said that I was a candidate for the bi-lateral procedure, and that the healing time was the same for both as it would be for just one, the answer was simple. The procedure went as planned, and the healing time was much easier than I had anticipated. His philosophy of having a dedicated hospital wing, and overall elevated level of patient care was exceptional. Dr. Toulson and his support staff communicated so well before, during and after the procedure, that unexpected surprises were minimal. Even within the first days following the procedure, I could tell significant improvements and I could do things I thought would never again be possible; simple things like lying down without pillows supporting my legs. After three days of post-operative care, with Dr. Toulson's assistance in scheduling, I was transferred to the residential physical rehabilitation center of my choice; one that was best for me and my family. I was released back to work, eight weeks after the surgery, as planned, with no restrictions. Today, I can say I actually feel normal again, often forgetting about even having the surgery. There is no pain. There is no need for pain relievers... NONE! Walking and bicycling are again part of my regular lifestyle and enjoyment rather than something I sit at home wishing I could do. I owe my most sincere thanks and gratitude to Dr. Toulson and will gladly rely on him if another Orthopedic situation arises.

Dr. Toulson was speaking at my club house. In no time I became so confident in him. He seemed so knowledgeable, self assured, caring, and I could sense he had a humble spirit. He asked if there were any questions, his answers were very direct and easy to understand. I had found my surgeon! I knew I could trust him. During my appointment for knee pain, he stressed that it is a whole team effort. He was so kind, I felt so good being in his hands. That day I made the appointment for surgery. On the day of the surgery, everything was just the way they said it would be. I was kept very comfortable. The pain was less than the pain I had prior the the surgery. Just Amazing! The food wasn't at all like typical hospital food, it was wonderful like a five star restaurant, all because Dr. Toulson has his own chef for his patients. After spending a few days in the hospital, I was taken to a rehab hospital of my choice. I was so amazed at how fast the recovery was going. Even the people at the hospital could hardly believe how fast I was healing. Everything they told me to do, I aced it. The last day I was there, they had me make muffins. While I was there I spent a lot of time praying for people. If you are a positive person and do the very best you can, and have Dr. Toulson do the surgery, maybe you too can feel like you have had a miracle. You just have to love and have great respect for a caring doctor like Dr. Charles Toulson. I am so grateful for him and his team. After his whole experience, I feel like he could be my son. Never before have I ever been treated by a doctor with such personal care and consideration. He is just a love.
